Historical Plates in Cinci
Alright, I know this has been discussed time and time again about whats "allowed", thats not what I'm asking. I know when you can drive it.

What I want to know is if those who have purchased historical plates have ever regretted it? Just bought an oldschool camaro and trying to decide if I'm going to regret putting on historical plates. Thinking about getting a temp tag so I can have my fun with it for 1 mo and then go with the historical plates since I doubt I'll drive it much except to cruise ins and car gatherings

Had them on my Datsun, just got nailed driving it to work a couple weeks ago. I was speeding ad didn't get a ticket for the plates but got reamed for driving on them..

I told the cop I was taking it into work to service it and then going to TNL after, he didn't want to hear it... lol. Said I can't drive it to work. I said its on the way to the meet. He said he didn't care, I wasn't supposed to be driving it anywhere but to and from the blah blah blah.

Yes it's great they only cost $25... Dick cops suck though.

Kisor, that cop didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. I've had Historical plates on the Biscayne for 11 or 12 years and have driven it to work may times over the years as well as just taking it out for a drive when I felt like it. Here it is straight from the Ohio BMV website.

To qualify, motor vehicles must be at least 25 years old. They are solely collector's items and are used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, etc. They are NOT for general transportation.

Notice the "etc."? What is that in there for??

Before I got mine I called Columbus and asked about the restrictions. I was told that the only real restriction was that you couldn't use them for general transportation. I guess in that cops mind, you have to trailer it every time you need to get it serviced.

That's how he made it out. I asked him "how am I supposed to get it worked on" and his response was "that's something you will have to figure out".

At that point I knew arguing it further would only get me out of there with less. I didn't want a ticket for no side mirrors and no bumpers thrown on top of the 83 in a 65.

I went ahead and got regular plates because I am driving it everyday now.

My opinion? It's not worth the hassle.

Basically, they're a magnet for cops on weekdays and late hours. They're only good if you plan on going to and from car shows, on the weekends, during daylight hours.

CivicB18B just had the issue with his E30, Green Township dickhead pulled him over for nothing more than driving with historical plates at 1AM, then threatened multiple other bullshit tickets. Seems to be about the norm.

It's just a headache, pay for normal plates.

get collector plates, still cheaper than normal plates and also much cheaper on insurance. On collector plates there is no driving restrictions, except that you have to have another primary vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR COLLECTOR’S PLATES AND APPLICATION
“Collector’s Vehicle” means any motor vehicle or agricultural tractor or traction engine of special interest having a fair market value of one hundred dollars or more, whether operable or not, that is owned, operated, collected, preserved, restored, maintained or used essentially as a collector’s item, leisure pursuit or investment, but not as the owner’s principal means of transportation.

Due to passage of supplementary legislation, additional criteria is required for the issuance of collector’s license plates. To ensure that all vehicles registered as collector vehicles are truly collectible, we now reference the National Automobile Dealers Association Classic, Collectible and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide. If the vehicle is not listed in this guide, we do have other comparable publications that are similarly authoritative and include the 4th Edition Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 (Krause Publications) or The New Complete Book of Collectible Cars 1930-1990 (Consumer Guide). Vehicle models not listed in these publications may be considered collector vehicles if the applicant obtains documentation from the manufacturer that the vehicle was in limited production or is in demand as a collectible vehicle at the time of application. To ensure every opportunity is afforded for the applicant to be granted collector’s license plates, additional consideration will be granted to applicants providing photographs to substantiate vehicle collectibility.

I'm in the middle of getting collector plates for the mustang. Word of advice. Stop by a local BMV place and have them verify your title and sign the form rather than sending your title to Columbus for them to lose it.

^totally... There is no way I'm sending my titles through the mail. I had the bmv verify the titles and sent the paperwork in 2 weeks ago. I'm trying to get collector plates on my 88 conquest, 82 cbx, and 91 zr1. I sent in pics and a description of each. I know the vette will qualify, hoping to get all 3.

Here's the crappy part, I just got the vette 2 weeks ago and titled it into my name without getting temp tags. Now that its in my name I can't get temp tags and have to wait for my collector plates before I can drive it, on the paperwork it said this can take up to 4 weeks!

that house looks like the one that I bought my fiero from... and the guy showed me his ZR1 in the garage. Your not the guy who sold me the fiero are you? haha.

Nice looking car though.

------

In other news, I applied for collectors plates. Lets see if they accept it. I haven't been able to track down anywhere that lists what vehicles are included in these "publications" and it seems irrational at times, so we shall see!

lol, yep, Just realized that as I looked at your sig, small world! you should definitely look into collector plates for the fieros instead of historic, they should qualify pretty easily and be less restricted.

Totally, my dad bought this car brand new when I was 12 years old so I grew up taking it for granted that this was just a vette. Then a friend of mine snuck out his dads vette when I was in highschool and I got a taste of a normal c4... way narrower tires and a much less impressive engine among many other things, needless to say I gained a lot of respect for the zr1 then.

Had heck of a time tracking down a 4spd manual 350 with matching numbers in decent condition, but eventually I found it.
