To be honest I put a thread like this 2 months ago. Everyone told me they were turds, drove one, and holy shit...it was. So I bought an s50 e30
I mean they are a bit of fun, coming from an m20 straight six e30, but they just seemed way too heavy for a mere 240 hp. Almost all of them were beat to hell, half the interior gadgets didnt work, and were full of rust. And that was in the 6-8k range. Like Nick said, if you want a "nice" one your'e going to be paying out the ass, which in that case you could get a much nicer rwd daily, e.g. cts-v.
Take their advice. But if you have your heart set go onto ohiobimmers.com. There are several for sale, and many people that will take you around in their m3's.

Mine went 13.8@103 few weeks after I got it on junk street tires.
Some more stuff done to it since I've had it, M50 intake manifold, Conforti intake, Active Autowerke exhaust with race pipe, Active Autowerke tune, Dr. Vanos stage 2 vanos, guessing 13.5ish range now...

I think you should . CSS appears to be very bored tonight and could use the lulz.

I got a pretty good feeling for how the car handles (which I liked), but the throttle felt very odd. Difficult to explain, but enough to make me second guess the car. I really just want to get it up to 45 at a normal pace, and if possible, have you actually open it up a some so I have an idea of what they should do. Is it a car you really have to get on to make it move? The engine just didn't seem eager to work.

They handle pretty well out of the box, but there will be some understeer. That can be resolved with a decent alignment and ditching the staggered tire setup in favor of a square setup. I've never thought my throttle modulation felt weird, but I have a different clutch/flywheel and throttle body now.
For not having a ton of power the inline 6 in these has respectable torque and power delivery. If anything, I felt like mine fell a bit flat after 6,000rpms when the car was still bone stock. The M50 manifold can help with that and is fairly cheap if you are a DIYer. I know a guy that is selling a very well maintained stock one, not sure on the price though.

Very clean looking car man . You should come out to some autocrosses this year. I agree with you maintainence; most E36 M3s in the 5-7K price range are going to be suspect. I'd say you can find a good example for around the $10K range though if you know what you're looking for.

Yeah cincySVT got shit on for sure lol.
I was not impressed with any aspect of the car in its stock form and I went out of my way to buy a nice clean well maintained example. You have to feed it a ton of throttle to do anything and it still seems laggy. They handle much better than your average AWD car, but I had an Evo at the time that would turn circles around it. A cheap one is going to be a pile of shit and an expensive one is going to be a waste of money.
I bought it because I believed the hype bandwagon and had seen (I seen it) all the typical magazine writers drool over them for years. Luckily there is a plethora of other kunty krauts out there that believe the hype as well and if you buy one and discover that it sucks you can sell it in 30 days like I did.

If I were to theoretically to ever buy an old bmw again, it would be limited to this car only:

I would go with the old gangster M6 over the 8 series though.
Juicey must have been watching top gear yesterday cause the 850 vs cl600 episode was on.

no top gear for me :( (in fact i dont ever remember seeing that episode, but my interest is now piqued)
The 850 has always been on the short list of cars I would own. I actually had looked at a couple 850ci's before I bought my rx7... like nick and jayrod suggested, too much investment, and too hard to actually make 'fast'... but they are nice cars IMO

nice looking, but that V12 is probably the most problematic engine BMW has ever made.
Overly complex (an ECU for each cylinder?) design led to MANY reliability problems. I agree its a sweet looking car but not worth the hassle of ownership.

No, an ECU for each bank (i.e. operates like 2 6cyl engines), not each cylinder. But yes, as I stated, this is one of the reasons I didnt purchase.

The top gear episode is great. They try to find the best cars under 7k and jeremy finds a cl600 and richard gets a 850. But the 850 was pretty slow compared to the benz. Still looked nice though.
