2012 engine does not like 2004 car.

Swapping 2004 intake cams in Thursday night.

If this doesn't work, it's LSx swap time.

2004-2007 have avcs (variable valve timing) on the intake side only. 2008+ have it on both intake and exhaust.
I'm currently running '12 intake cams and '04 exhaust cams with '04 cam gears on everything. I had to do this, as the 2004 ecu doesn't support exhaust avcs. We are swapping '04 intake cams in as the centerlines may be different as well as trigger points on the cams for avcs.

There's also air pumps on the 08+ engines for emissions that just blow fresh air through the heads, but those are deleted with block off plates.

Did you swap the crank pulley?

one is not like the other, '03 vs '06 Forester, ECU was not getting proper signal and throwing codes

Quote:
It wasn't the ECU or the timing belt. It was actually the crank gear. Car was throwing a crank position sensor code after re-assembly and generally running like shit. It'd fire up, but backfire a lot and miss. It was running lean and wasn't able to be revved much past idle.

No codes are thrown. If it were a crank gear issue, the ecu would notice. The crank sensor was also replaced.

You might want to double check that, actually the ecu isn't going to know anything is wrong as it references EVERYTHING else off the crank signal.

If the triggers are different its going to try and fire things and look for cam reference at the wrong time.

Pretty easy thing to swap compared to cams....

Found the solution to your problem:

Remove the EJ25 engine and throw it in the dumpster. Take the LS6 sitting next to the vehicle, and put that in instead. It'll take more work, but you've already got a headache.

It would need an ecu and complete harness swap. More of a headache.

I'll just swap the crank gear while I've got everything off anyway.

I would rather swap pinouts than tear down a motor... particularly if it makes a performance difference...
