MR2 Rebuild... pics this time
Ok so I thought I'd start a new thread about my mr2 rebuild project,
Quick background on car / where it's going:
1991 MR2 Turbo
-Gen3 Swap (i think this is like motor 4 or 5 who knows)
~170k mi
-Apexi N1 Pro Coilovers
-Black 18" Wheels
etc...
My mr2 is the car I've learned to work on cars with and is past the point of a comical joke of a pit of money to I just plain consider every dollar spent on it one thats gone as I never intend to sell this car. I started out doing my first major project on a car on this one doing a clutch in a 1 car garage at my old condo, many years and mistakes since then I'm still cleaning up.
---
So the mods looking to go in on this round:
Done:
- Supra Fuel Pump
- New hydraulic clutch & brake lines
- New front sway bar end links
- New transaxle seals (not needed but why not?)
- CRW HD Axles (Thanks Ty @ TCS!)
Still to go:
- Braided AN line from tank to fuel filter
- 93+ brakes
- Berk gt3071 twin scroll turbo kit
- Rewire fuel pump for 5th time (my wiring gets better every time!)
- Speed source shifter bushings
- New brake master cylinder
- Sard 800 cc injectors
- Nemesis Standalone
- "No Shoes" tune
Whats gone wrong so far (on this rebuild)?
- Front sway bar end link wouldn't come off, had to cut then drill then cut etc..
- Axle install took over 4 hours plus had to put in a new vice!
- Speedo Sensor wiring pulled out the sensor, had to rewire and now I'm thinking I may have mixed up the wires so may get to do this yet again
- Snapped a AN fitting I needed to make fuel line
Pics in next post

It runs!!!
Well decently considering the exhaust is only half bolted on and the wastegate isn't installed yet or the intake or any piping from turbo to intake manifold or the throttle cable
So still lots to go but it finally runs

Hopefully I can get it close to being done...

A few items off my todo list from last night:
Still to go:
- Braided AN line from tank to fuel filter
- Berk gt3071 twin scroll turbo kit (most of the way)
- Rewire fuel pump for 5th time (my wiring gets better every time!)
- Speed source shifter bushings
- New brake master cylinder
----------
A couple things I learned yesterday:
1. never buy a kit from a guy named berk
2. never trust a damned thing to fit on a kit for a gen3
3. clutch hardlines can and will bend!
4. shimming the clutch pivot ball definitely works but makes for one hell of a slave cylinder install!
5. don't attempt to replace the clutch hardline in the front of the car its just too entangled
My new turbo looks cool, but functional it's definitely not, the coatings are soo thin on everything that if you look at it it scratches. Compressor housing rubbed hardcore on the clutch hard lines, and still hits the heat shields a little.
Vband clamp on hot side of turbo looks cool but is a real whore to get on.
Berk's hoses are the biggest pos in history. My oil return line rubs where it hits the downpipe support bracket. In a $2k+ kit you get shit rubber lines with heat wrap that look like utter hell and I'll have to redo them.
My turbo intake while looking cool has no port for the gen3 IAT even though the kit was for a gen3. It has 1 port on it and I'm not sure what hose goes to it as there were 2 on the stock gen3 and I can't remember.
... not that I'm bitter but in hindsight I should have bought a speed source gt28rs kit and been enjoying my car way earlier with way higher quality results.

Ordered this:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
And a ton of fittings today from summit
Looking to run -10 AN hose for my entire A2W setup, I just need to get some slim line fans ordered up next and wired in then back up to bob's braided for the final lines

yeah I'll have the brakes finished today as my banjo bolts finally showed up :) Completely new brake setup from start to finish so I'm hoping for a real good pedal feel, I'm really happy with the whole new clutch setup it's 10x better then before.
I've got to continue mocking up the last of a2w setup, I just hope summit doesn't take real long shipping me my stuff, if I get it before the weekend I should have the a2w setup finished this weekend sans fans

Berk kit fitment sucked:
* Turbo rubs heat shields
* Turbo sat on clutch hard lines (not rub, literally f'in sat on them)
* Turbo adaptor once you tighten 1 nut down you can't get a socket on the other 4
* Had to grind my coating off the adaptor and down into it to even install it
* Turbo compressor housing wasn't tapped for boost source like was requested
* Took months to arrive
* Wastegate flange mounted completely wrong unless I plan to cut a hole in my hood for the wastegate to stand out of
* No clamps (wtf on a $2k+ "bolt on" kit)
* Cheap hoses
* Dump tube is within millimeters of exhaust, bad cheaply routed flex hose
* Oil feed rubs turbo compressor housing
* Shipped wrong wastegate, took months to get replacement
* Intake pipe was a nightmare to fit and doesn't have gen3 iat sensor hole, points the one port it has on it straight to the ground
I've spent soo much time working around these mistakes it'd been easier to start from beginning.

went to dyno @ Cincyspeed today with Noshoes
321hp / 287 torque
Car runs really well on the street
My a2w heat exchanger didn't do well being behind the radiator so I have to redo that
I'll post pics and more details later posting from iPhone
