Putting an 81 Malibu (auto) into Neutral Without Shifting
So, my family has had this car in our drive way for years and I've been trying to sell it all summer long. It hasn't run in over 15 years but we stopped driving it because of a power steering problem I believe. I found the keys and went to put it into neutral but the steering column is frozen and the key won't turn at all. I've tried using graphite, turning the wheel at the same time, etc with no results. Is there any way I can put the car in neutral without actually shifting it into the neutral gear? I had one guy who was really interested in buying it that was going to come out and do it himself but he flaked out at the last minute so I'm hoping that if I can put it into neutral myself it will help the thing to sell quicker.
Any ideas or tips are appreciated and also inb4 "eat shit ricer"

Chalk wheel, or have someone hit the brakes, get under the car and shift the trans into neutral manually.

There is a shifter cable on side of the trans attached to a bracket, should be on the left side. Push the bracket back.

If its a column shift it will not be a cable.

If like mom's 72 Skylark, under a minute to remove the linkage at the tranny, select N, then roll the car back into parking spot so it doesn't look like you took it around the street.
Didn't need a key for almost a year, until it locked up as I was parking it and couldn't find where the keys were hidden.
They were in the chicken.

break the plastic covering the gauges. Reach in there and move the little indicator from P to N. Problem solved and you didn't even get dirty.

That doesn't get u past the steering wheel lock.
Just unbolt the shifter linkage at the trans. 5/8" nut I do believe. Then use pliers to move shaft out of park and u are good |
