My slow STI

I stumbled across a Craigslist ad last week regarding a 2004 STI with 69,xxx miles last week for <$7k. I went and checked out the car within a couple hours of seeing the ad and decided to take a chance on it, knowing the engine was toast (0 compression on the passenger side. Engine turned over freely with no odd noises).

Conned AAA into towing it using my mother's membership
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...8FEE4178B0.jpg

Yesterday I found a complete longblock, freshly rebuilt by Phoenix Performance, a shop out of PA that does endurance racing in their two STI rayscars. The engine is assembled using OE parts, except it has JE pistons, ARP head studs, and Power Enterprises head gaskets. For the price I got it for, it was a no-brainer. I also picked up a rebuilt Blouch Dom 1.5xtr turbo (49 lb/min, for those that are Subaru-tarded), for half retail. This turbo is good up to 400whp with bolt-ons on pump gas, and 475+ on e85. I'll be shooting for 350-ish on a conservative tune.
The rest of the supporting mods.....clutch, larger top mount, 850cc injectors, fuel pump, etc will be ordered within a week.

I look forward to eating shit.

Kisor 01-21-2013 09:27 AM

Appears to be 4x4 status...

Carbon01GT 01-21-2013 09:46 AM

It is, indeed.

droccm98 01-21-2013 10:07 AM

That's pretty clean lookin, needs more rice.

Carbon01GT 01-21-2013 11:53 AM

I ordered an STI badge for the wrx trunk, just so all the ricers know it's not straight line friendly

Walter 01-21-2013 04:47 PM

Looks to be a nice car. Good luck with the build.

HATEMENOW 01-21-2013 06:32 PM

man i love Sti's... what i dont love is how they drink oil.. legit pick up

Carbon01GT 01-21-2013 06:44 PM

........

Carbon01GT 01-21-2013 07:16 PM

That's why this will be getting a catch can or air-oil separator.
My WRX might drink 3/4-1 quart over 5,000 miles

Killer B oil pickup and windage tray ordered...as well as Power Enterprise 850cc injectors (actually flow 935cc at 3 bar)

ej1bmx 01-21-2013 07:43 PM

I wish I had your money  You still have both motorcycles too?

Carbon01GT 01-21-2013 08:26 PM

Sold the dirt bike and race bike in October/November. Still have the street bike though.

Anyone wanna buy an 09 wrx....98k miles?

ej1bmx 01-21-2013 08:48 PM

Ahh, didn't know you sold the race bike. I knew the dirt bike was gone though....

I'm interested in the 09 wrx, but I do have a few questions before I send my broker with a check to purchase the vehicle;

How has it been driven?

Has it ever been smoked in?

Handjob?

Has it ever been eaten in?

Was it stored outside, or in a garage?

Do you have any pictures?

Do you PIITB?

Does it have any dents or dings?

Any body work done?

How often is the car waxed and/or polished?

Will you take trades?

What brand are the tires?

What is your SSN?

How much tread is left on the tires?

Has this car been out of state?

Has this car been used for illegal activity?

Any flood damage?

Any storm damage?

Any fire damage?

Original glass?

Anything not original?

Matching VIN?

What is the VIN?

A little encouragement I stumbled upon- http://www.iwsti.com/forums/power-br...-torque-2.html

Same setup, less the headers and up-pipe.

Placing the order tonight/tomorrow on the rest of my parts...just waiting on an email back from my vendor. Might actually have this thing up and going within a month!

xander 01-22-2013 10:11 PM

Nice car man.

Seems someone dropped and cracked the heads at some point. Also appears to have used vice grips on the cams

Both heads are toast

sxShep 01-24-2013 02:26 AM

In before Shiftdrift comment...

grandmaGTP 01-24-2013 03:10 AM

Shoulda used royal purple.

99slobra 01-24-2013 11:59 PM

probably ported the heads with sand.

Carbon01GT 01-25-2013 12:32 AM

I was thinking a chisel

ullBsorry 01-25-2013 10:05 AM

Wow. Someone actually welded the piece back to the head? lol

nice pickup though....always loved WRX's

Carbon01GT 01-25-2013 10:11 AM

Yeah and it has a small hairline crack in the weld

jdredd 01-25-2013 10:11 AM

One would think.. if you have to weld your head back together.. that its time to put down the tools and back away.

Since my buddy got a new STI, i've become a fan.

Carbon01GT 01-25-2013 10:12 AM

I'm slightly depressed, as I have spent quite a bit of money and nothing to show for it....all my parts are in transit.

That's the only time of year these cars are worth having around.

You should have bought a Corvette

Carbon01GT 01-25-2013 12:19 PM

Vette wouldn't cut it. Newborn baby, winter time, grocery store, soccer practice, etc....

Jesse 01-25-2013 01:27 PM

Gzzz... wonder if they were using a vice grip to hold the cam to get the cam bolt out and it broke the head with the force applied on it by the vicegrip? Either way, that's nuts.

Carbon01GT 01-25-2013 02:12 PM

That's the conclusion we came to, Jesse. Definitely some bright ones working on this car in the past...

Carbon01GT 02-01-2013 11:22 AM

Got a few treats in the mail today:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...ps82217fc0.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...psfbe3f2c0.jpg

The next obstacle is deleting the exhaust side avcs...which isn't really difficult. The only part I don't have currently are the cam seals. The cams, cam gears, and valve covers, I already have.
I hate waiting for parts...

Edit: Beechmont Subaru had the cam seals in stock!

Carbon01GT 02-04-2013 10:19 AM

Progress:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...psc3e453f6.jpg
Deleted exhaust AVCS, as the 2004 ecu only supports intake AVCS. Swapped exhaust cams to 04-07 cams and checked valve lash. All in spec.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...ps898e37a4.jpg
Also mocked up the parallel fuel lines...some trimming likely needed, but that's what I expected.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...ps87d5a458.jpg

We weren't able to do much more as I didn't think about needing the 04-07 intake cam gear (thought we could use the 2012). No big deal, as I need to pickup 04-07 cam gear bolts from Subaru, as the 08+ bolts are too long to work with 04-07 cam gears.

The cam gears will be installed Tuesday night and the engine will hopefully get dropped in as well that night. Startup is possible, but I'm foreseeing that taking place this Saturday evening.

9cobra4 02-04-2013 01:05 PM

Those engines are so fucked up looking. Lol

Carbon01GT 02-04-2013 02:15 PM

They're a bit difficult to work on because of their design. Nothing is easy to do in the car besides fluid changes.

droccm98 02-04-2013 02:28 PM

serious question, where do the plugs and coils go? since the front has the timing assembly, up side of the head is injectors and intake

Carbon01GT 02-04-2013 02:49 PM

Center of the valve covers, on the sides, which would technically be the top of the engine if it wasn't a flat 4.
Changing those suck when the engine is in the car.

1sicws6 02-04-2013 09:58 PM

Looks like LT1dave ported the heads and patched the block up

Carbon01GT 02-06-2013 12:13 PM

Killer B Oil pickup and tray installed:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...psf2f28b3b.jpg

Timing belt and covers are all back on. Clutch and flywheel will be bolted on Saturday and hopefully it will get started up as well.

That would drive me insane. on my a4, i could have plugs and coil packs changed in like 15 minutes.

2007ShelbyCobra 02-06-2013 08:28 PM

dig?
