View Full Version : Import Day 5/16/04
If that is the best Cincinnati has to offer then that is pathetic. Half of the cars should not have been racing. The 11 second 1g DSM was very impressive though. What's the deal with a bunch of 14 second Evo's and STi's?

What rpm does that turbo reach full boost? The most impressive car there I think. At least more exciting than a low 14 second 3rd gen RX-7 and high 14 second Supra with an auto. At least the Supra was probably a non-turbo, but I'm pretty sure FD's run high 13's stock.

It was on ok turnout, not what I expected personally. I did expect all the slow Hondas however. I also got to meet a lot of the DSM guys on here which was very nice, dsm4dsm, smytty, NOLV4V8, 9secondtalon, and a few others. I definately had a good time even though I couldn't race my pos.
It's gonna be fun to try and find out why my car ate 4 quarts of oil in just 600 miles....

Jigga what? Does the AWD help spool turbos because of having more weight to move or is that a very efficient turbo? I must know what turbo now.

Jigga what? Does the AWD help spool turbos because of having more weight to move or is that a very efficient turbo? I must know what turbo now.LOL, Well you figure you launch the car at 5k so as soon as you launch your at full boost.. Then i shift at 7k each time, so the rpms only drop to about 4500-5000 in between shifts... So the spooling time is a split second... The turbo is a br475 secret, secret in meaning there was diff wheels used in the turbo...Also buschur makes some good shit too lol...
I'm curious when it reaches full boost to get an idea of how much usable powerband it has. I only go drag racing for bragging rights and prefer just zipping around on backroads, so if it reached full boost at 5krpm then it wouldn't suite my needs well. But, since this is a DSM specific turbo it probably wouldn't fit an SR.

It reaches full boost around 3k, i was just saying when you launch the car at 5k being a awd, you dont havt to wait for it to spool ,as you would say for a race that you roll into the gas.... My car pulls all the way to 7k, this turbo does not give out.... Like my 16 g i would shift at diff rpm range b/c it would just run out of gas

The most impressive car I seen was the old CRX that was runnin low 13's on a stock SOHC motor. All it had was a make shift turbo kit(and I meen make shift) It had an aerosol can for part of his intercooler piping! They finished the car at 9 in the morning tdday and tuned it on the high way on the way to EdgeWater from Edgewood. Those two guys definately get my respect. The one dude was Dirty as Fuck!! Looks like he was rollin around in mud for a week. It was bad ass though. My next vote goes to the black 1g talon that won something. Was that you Smytty?

The guy that had the black one was a pretty nice guy, i think he won the quik 8... We figured with my car it was pretty much testing grounds for it today, the turbo or the car hasnt seen boost like that for awhile... The car ran a 11.88 on 22pounds.. We still have 3 to 4 more to play with.... The car wasnt showing knock or pullin timing at all... Hell im happy with it, the clutch was starting to slip towards the end of the day.. Im going to replace that and get the 4bolt in and im sure it will put out better numbers...

The black 1G DSM that ran two 12.0x's was some kid from Cleveland, or at least I believe so as he had a Cleveland DSM sticker on his car. Cool kid nonetheless, and had a nice 20g. He had problems with an injector plug but I guess he fixed it before the bracket racing, which is where I think he won something, but I dunno.
red90awd, the red 1G was a FWD turbo and ran a best of 14.4 I believe, it belongs to John (ObsesseDSM)

the reason you didn't see any real fast cars was probably cause eveyone was at cruisefest. from what i herd there wasn't that many people there. i didn't make it cause i didn't wake up until like 12. so beau just come back in oct. when everyone has nothing else to do and i'm sure you will see twice as many cars and twice as fast.

Most of the hondas that tried to run were plagued with problems. Josh's car still has so much left in it. Only running 22 psi plus best 60 ft. of the day was only in the high 1.7 range i believe. Factor in a better holding clutch and a 4 bolt rear and ets will def. drop. Wish my car was ready to run. Made me feel helpless just watching other people have fun. I agree with the stis and evos, I was not impressed with any that ran.
The black 1g belong to a guy named Mike who currently resides in Columbus as he goes to school there. He's got a 20g and ran a best of 12.0 at around 117. 11s were within his reach too, but then that injector clip fucked him. On the run where that came off, he managed a 12.0 at 103. Can you imagine what would've happened if he still could've pulled through the traps at full potenetial? The 13 second crx belongs to a friend of Dave Blundel's (can't ermember his name right now). It was running a stock d16a6 (out of the crx si) in a gutted crx hf and was pushing 11 psi on race gas. I heard he did a 13.1 but before that was running 13.6s on slicks at 107 with a 2.5 60 ft. That is just ridiculous and another reason why I decided not to try to turbo my crx.
Adam and I got to run on the way back from ricewater and he pulled on me a bit. My car was running like ass this afternoon but actually felt stronger on the way to the gym later with 2 other people in it. lol. Anyway, today was a long overdue awesome day spent with friends.

I had a lot of fun putting together the car of aeosol cans, coat-hanger t-bolts and bic pen couplers.
I had even more fun tuning it on the highway to edgewater.
I was amazed it did as well as it did consideing we had ONE test run prior to eliminations, and didn't get a 60' under 2.1
I'm glad Tony had more fun driving it than I did building it though. :)

That is awsome... I love thrashing, thats when I work the best. I cant count the sleepless nights Ive had working on freinds, families, and customers racecars to barely make it to first rounds.
I was up till 5:30 am last night (only slept 2.5 hours fri night also) working on my car. I almost lost complete motivation cause I was only doing a clutch and going from a 16g to a stock turbo. Took a nap and then finished up right around 10 today.. then on the way to the track the thing started missing and I knew exactly what it had to be.. spark plug wire rubbing on cam gear.. Bought a set of NGK's off of Wegman and rolled out. It all seemed pointless on a basically stock car but its what we do this for... if it was easy everbody would be doing it. It made it all worth it leaving the track with more money than What I came with.

no offense, but seeing as you didn't run your car, picking on those who did doesn't quite seem appropriate. I didn't run my car either so I have no room to talk. now I will admit that those 19s civics were pretty bad.

I had a great time at the event and want to say congrats to Josh on getting to the 12.1's and with a little more seat time and a little better boost you will have to park it until you get a cage. :luxhello: Why is it lately all the cars I build need cages? Robs car looked even better under sunlight rather than shop lights, anyone have pics of it to post? The black 1G that Mike owns was fast and congrats to him on winning the Quick 8. Looked to be a good turn out, BUT the October Import Day will be bigger. I know my car will be done and by then should be into some sick numbers. Who knows, maybe Rob, Josh & Brandon will all have cages and will be deepier in the 11's.

The backfires occur when power shifting. It happens every time with stage 1 SRT4s, and I don't know how frequent it happens on stock ecu cars. I power shift into 3rd and 4th each run. I guess it has something to do with leaving your foot on the gas and jamming it into the next gear. It definitely helps because there is no boost drop between gears :luxhello:

I was hoping to see some of those red turbo hondas run, but after hearing one barely start my hopes were dashed.
you and me both...I have the red coupe. I got two clean passes all day, and they were the first two. I ran 13 psi on both of them with a street ignition map. First pass was 13.8@109 and the second was 13.5@111. I turned up the boost to 17 psi and put in my race gas ignition map. As soon as I did I found some serious problems. Still netted me a 13.1@92 mph but the igntion just fell apart on me. 7k in third broke up and I didn't even get to 100 mph in 4th. Damn shame, it would have been a deep 12 second pass.
It turns out I had a bad batch of c16. When I finally got it started, it died again on the side of the road. A friend of mine ran up and got me some pump gas (thanks Chris.) I got it on the highway missing and studder, but by the time I got home it was better. In fact, after filling the tank with 93 it ran flawless after burning out the remaining bad gas. I got damn lucky I didn't lose the motor.
Oh well, sucks for me. I really hoped for a good showing....

I got too drunk and had a huge hangover  Brett's red hatch broke down on the way home, didnt hear if he ran or not but he still needs a tune on 15 psi first :luxhello:
yup blew a head gasket i think...not fun. i did run and was disappointed i guess, but no traction (i cant drive considering it was the first time in 7 months) the entire time. i got a lot of compliments on the cleanliness of hatch and was very pleased (thanks a bunch troy/obie). i got to chat with ppl about setups and whatnot too which was a joy. but we'll see when it gets back out about that 15psi josh...

My friend and I got a few vids from import day and a decent amount of pictures. Once I get them ill post them up. I have avid of Smytty's 12.12 pass i blieve it is. I missed the 11.88 and i missed getting the mini van that was doing the burnout. Hell i think the mini van had the best burnouts out of all the cars, other than maybe the supra who won something in the show and did one on his way back.
and those 2 RX7's with big turbos ran crappy times imo. Also it looke dlike no one there knew how to drive an AWD car other than maybe 2 or 3 people, hecne why all the Evo's and STi's had crap times.

That was the worst turn out ever for Import Day, there was double the cars last year maybe the October Import day will have a better turnout

I ran 11.88 in Smittys car, I would have been more than happy to make someones EVO or STI faster.

The silver TT z is mine i ran a 13.3@107.77 mph having serious traction problems. I think i could have been high 12's if i could have hooked up. I also went into safety boost a few times as well. But all in all i am happy with the runs. First time in my Z at the track.
I heard you were wheel hopping? Have you figured out the best way to launch and not hop as much? PM me please with some tips, if tuned I'll be running next time around.

As for the EVO guys not liking DSMs, I know what you mean. I learned how to tune the EVO from Tym on Daves EVO. Then at Norwalk last year when we rented the track; me, Dave, Tym, and Kevin Lawson all set new EVO records one after the other. I'm positive I could be of help to the guys but I have learned to not go out of my way to offer when not wanted. That dude believe it or not was the Network Admin for a company I use to work for.LOL His office was just as dirty.
Haha, the truth comes out! Admittedly, I've been to Blundar's house, and his workroom's squalor doesn't even come close to mine. ;)
I'm of the opinion that the racegas did Tony's car a disservice, he wasn't anywhere near his octane/knock limited power level on pump. Still, almost cracking a 12 on the maiden voyage is... very impressive. That's some good quick + dirty tuenaring on Dave's part, and excellent driving of a tractionless FWD shitbox by Tony.
I'm rolling up to Todd's in Mechanicsburg in a couple weeks to pick up my mani and IC, and I want to swing by Blundy's to hang out/grab my spindles from him. I'd like to see the CRX, and if you want we can do a tuenaring run or three with my RoadDyno, and get some power figures.

the silver 2nd gen RX7 is one of my friends...
he has a T78 turbo with a Mack Truck FMIC.
last year he ran a 13.0 on 9psi on street tires.
this weekend was the first time its really been drivin in the past couple months. he was up till 5am on sunday installing a water injection setup, and was having some serious issues with it.
basically it really needs tuned bad. it will be going to raceline for a lot of dyno time, and after that, it will be ungodly. even more so than now. it doesn't hit full boost until almost 7grand, and then it's absolutely insane. needless to say it's a highway machine.

i'm pretty sure it was 9.
i think last year when he hit 13.0 it was 9-10. and he wouldn't turn it up anymore, even though he'd drove it on 12lbs before no problem.
so far he's only street tuned it with a Haltec and wideband

sad considering I push my 14b on the street to 16psi, and it's a baby compared to a T78.
Does he not have the fuel components to support it?

16psi on a T78 is more than TWICEthe cfm your 14B puts out. Its not easy to support Bar and better on huge ass turbos. Theres lots and lots of air you need to supply fuel for.

psi is based on motors
some motors only run 9-10 psi.
DSMs can handle high boost.
Funny thing is some make same amount of power on 10 psi as we do on 20

I think that the fast cars didn't show up because Edgewater's import day is ran terrible. Last year they finally had a quick class, but right before it started they said oh, this is brackets not heads up. They were all pretty pissed. Bracket racing 10, 11, 12 second cars kinda sucks.
Two turbo Dodges also had 11 sec passes, and marion ran a 12.6 in his SRT-4 with bolt-ons.
